Many of you may have heard of the impact of light (or lack of it) on our bodies via the discovery of S.A.D (that’s seasonal affective disorder). Just as lack of light during winter can impact our mood, so light can have a positive “re-setting” function on our circadian rhythms (the cycles of our body – especially sleep).
The circadian rhythm is more a function of darkness and light rather than actual time of day. Bright light can discourage drowsiness, and darkness can cause sleepiness, day or night. Light therapy is a treatment used for people who suffer from circadian rhythm sleep disorders. Your body has an internal clock that tells it when it is time to be asleep and when it is time to be awake.

According to a 1999 survey, about 30% of American women and 20% of men reported taking a medication to help them sleep at some time during the course of a year. Over half of these drugs were over the counter medications.
It should be stressed that only behavioral or psychological techniques can actually cure insomnia, (and that is what this site is dedicated to) whereas prolonged use of sleeping pills can only result in dependency.

I would not have believed it, but one of the stinkiest herbs I have ever smelled is also very effective as a cure for insomnia.
The Valerian Root herb has been used to treat insomnia for a very long time – according to some records, it was used as early as Hippocrates in 460BC. It was also noted back then that it has a rather unpleasant smell.

One of perhaps the more obvious causes of sleeplessness is tension. That feeling that you just can’t relax and feel ‘twitchy’ as you lie in bed trying to sleep.
