Taking A Walk With A Guide

Guided imagery is a meditation technique widely considered to assist with relaxation, stress relief and promoting good sleep.

It is a technique that usually starts with deep breathing and other deep breathing exercises.

When you relax, your imagination comes alive and the recording will guide you through a variety of scenes, using your imagination to help you find peacefulness and relaxation.

Common guided imagery scenarios include beach side strolls, mountain hikes, or nature walks through the forest.  At the end of your guided imagery session you should feel calm and relaxed.

Originally developed by Hanscarl Leuner (a German psychiatrist) based on his research into the interaction between our mental and emotional processes, especially in dreams and daydreams.  It can also be known as Guided Affective Therapy (or even more technically, katathym imaginative psychotherapy), but I think that makes it sound much more ‘medical’ than necessary.

Guided imagery gives you and your brain a clear focus and you listen to your guide as they take you on a journey to a beautiful and relaxing place.  It works similarly to other meditation techniques, with the end result that you either drift off to sleep, or are left feeling relaxed enough to do so on your own.

Many psychotherapists and hypnotists provide high quality guided imagery recordings and the links I have posted here will take you to a few good ones.

Happy “walking” :)
